(is that a house rule? I'm okay with it if it is, but I thought the rule book said grabbing a skill increase from a focus allows you to ignore the level requirement for a skill.)

(okay, I think I've got a mission. There are some ruins on Jagrati of the old capital city that was destroyed during The Scream. Might be a good training environment for a little war game between two formations with refugees, hazards and possibly criminals hiding out in the area. What do you think? )

Sounds good to me!
Avatar
(okay, we;ve got two days of downtime from here to Jagrati as an NMC shuttle brings you to the capital, the rules for that are in our rulebook and i can help with that if you need)
Avatar
havelthegravel(Tim) 22-Feb-22 08:52 PM
During the 2 days, Kreuhn heads over to the ship's computer, looking up any info he can on Jagrati. He's mainly focused on the current political landscape, and crime stats. (if the ship has some information on the planet he could research, then he will do so while putting 2 days of training into the Know skill, to eventually get it to Know-0)
Avatar
(sounds good, the scouting report here is all we know bout the capital world, so you can see we dont know much about the other cities )
Avatar
Returning to Jagrati, a message is promptly beamed to the ship for you to review, coming from Cooperative command itself, for your eyes only.
Avatar
havelthegravel(Tim) 23-Feb-22 06:50 PM
Slightly puzzled by the confidentiality, Kreuhn opens up the message
Avatar
Most of the dats is written in the typically flowery style of the Cooperative's various coordination departments or offices. A war game is being conducted in the heart of the ruins of Old Jagrati, though this is something more than just a training opportunity. Live wepaons will be used, and instead of two NMC formations squaring off one another the exercise is going to be billed as ruin clearing with the intent to arrest criminals, former nobles and their staff, and anyone else evading the law who is lurking in the ruins of the old capital city. it is also thought there is a sizable refugee population living there, unable to make the far journey north to the new capital or to any of the other larger cities of note on other coasts. The Cooperative wants to ensure they are found, aided, and relocated- a secondary duty for the operation. You are being given command of two platoons to help the sweep, and they are mustering with a large Cooperative formation at the edge of the city.
Avatar
havelthegravel(Tim) 24-Feb-22 12:44 AM
Kreuhn is rather pleased that his mission is more substantial than routine training. Excited to get a chance for commanding this many troops, he's determined to do a good job at it. He replies to NMC Command "I gladly accept the mission. In order to maximize our chances of success, I'd like to request some additional intel, if you have it. Do you have any specific criminals and/or nobles you believe to be hiding inside the ruins? How experienced are the soldiers in these 2 platoons? And most importantly, do you want our enemies to be killed or captured?"
Avatar
They’d like captures if possible but they know not everyone might give you the opportunity. The members of House Meridian were in the ruins and were recently arrested in an unrelated operation. There is no official Intel on if there are others. These platoons are green, some of the first to be drawn from common citizens and not drafted from noble house guard of landed wealthy folks doing it more for the glory than love of country or belief in the common defense.

(feeling better) Once Kreuhn lands, he will proceed directly to wherever he can meet up with the platoons, and ask to see whichever officers are the highest ranking in each platoon.
Avatar
Each platoon is led by a platoon sergeant and a corporal acting as their assistant, as well as a captain above them. All told, including you, your gathering consists of six people.
Avatar
havelthegravel(Tim) 28-Feb-22 05:19 PM
"Alright, my martial experience is mostly against machines, and not much on Jagrati either. I'll be relying on all of you for this. We've got exploiters in hiding, and our mission is to capture if possible. Lethal force is allowed, but follow the rules of engagement (assuming that's a concept in the NMC). Kreuhn points at one of the platoon sergeants. "You and your men are with me, the other platoon will follow our path 15 minutes behind. Their job is both receive prisoners and also to check for any movement after Alpha Platoon sweeps an area. If someone's hiding from Alpha and trying to leave after we pass, they'll probably leave a trail to follow. Lets start this rain from the closest point to the city. Any questions?"

"Change of plan, Alpha Platoon is with me and we'll come in from the west side (assuming up is north on that map), staying spread out to cover the area. Bravo will do the same but start from the east. Check all around any structure before entering, then clear each room. Stay in squads no smaller than 5 men. Each platoon should keep 10 men at the perimeter, to prevent escapes and to receive prisoners. Alpha, we're starting at the remains of the office block. Bravo, starts at the remains of the night club."
Avatar
(yeah, no need to make this more confusing for you. Everything is oriented correctly)

Stun baton in hand, Kreuhn is taking up the front, looking for the first walled off area to sweep through. He's keeping vocal orders to a minimum whenever possible, opting for basic hand signals. No need to announce the presence of the law to anyone hiding just yet.

Entering the office block you can see a small reception area. It looks like the computer here was carried off by someone, though the keyboard and mouse have been left behind. You also see that the double doors leading into the wider office space have been smashed, but much of the actual office floor here is dark.

"Alright, this is the NMC. We're here for former nobles and current criminals. Our second priority is aiding the relocation of refugees here. I am in charge of the troops here, and I'm asking if any of you know the location of any ex-nobles or crime bosses."
Avatar
There is another shifting as you make out, barely, a mother with a swaddled child, trying to make herself very small underneath the desk she has chosen for shelter. She looks like she has not eaten in at least a day
Avatar

"Whether or not any of you can help us, we can help you. You're all going back to the capital where there's going to be plenty of food." He points at one squad of troops "Escort them back to the ones holding the perimeter. Any rations we've got are getting distributed to the refugees, but make sure we've still got some for any others we find. Once you bring them safely to the back, meet up with us again."

The first squad begins moving in to grab them and upon hearing they’re going to be fed things seem to be better and less stressful. Nothing else remains in here but destroyed computers and junk.

The door breaks in the middle and folds in half like a sheet of paper after a hammer blow. The security system inside begins beeping though its warble is out of tune and sounds weak as it burns through what must be the last of its power. There doesn't seem to be any kind of lethal deterrent connected to the system, but a signal has surely gone somewhere.
Avatar
havelthegravel(Tim) 08-Mar-22 01:10 AM
"Alright, looks like they've got someone worth protecting!" he says to his men. "ALRIGHT, THIS IS THE NMC! COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP, OUR ORDERS ARE TO ROUND UP NOBLES AND CRIMINALS, AND TO RELOCATE REFUGEES. REFUGEES HAVE NOTHING TO FEAR, WE HAVE FOOD. " After shouting, he makes sure to hold the stun baton instead of the hammer and starts running into the room.
Avatar
No one emerges. Nothing seems to be inside that is capable of moving , and the security looks to be part of when this was a shop- and no one has had the tools on hand to force a way in
Avatar
havelthegravel(Tim) 08-Mar-22 01:48 PM
"Ah, false alarm then. Let's move to the vehicle showroom next in that case."
Avatar
A few soldiers move inside anyway to sweep the place and see if anything had been left behind here from Pre-scream days that the Cooperative does not have. You hear the sounds of them picking through things within as you move to the large vehicle showroom. Anti-theft shutters have been pulled down over the normally glass showroom windows and the thin metal garage door like barriers prevent you from seeing inside. Only a small service door looks to the an entryway.

Kreuhn will try to break through the anti-theft barrier with his hammer

The hammer bites deep. You hear the crunch of glass behind it and it folds in half, revealing a showroom of dusty but sleek looking roadsters, and two people fleeing into the workshop around the back of the building.
Avatar
havelthegravel(Tim) 16-Mar-22 02:04 AM
He has no clue if they are refugees or criminals, but the cars are making him think criminals. He sprints after them, stun baton in hand "Halt! We have food and medicine! I mean you no harm if you won't harm us!"
Avatar
There is a bang as something heavy hits the back door, and as they flee into the street. You see two people running,
Avatar

You see that they're running south, and then cut east down the block. You lose them after that and the wind quickly sweeps their sandy footprints away. They might run into another cordon before long and maybe then you'll get a chance at questioning them. This showroom upon returning to it has several interesting models of groundcar. A few are grav models, and all would be quite expensive on the open market.

"Damn! Ah well, I'm sure we'll get them at some point during this sweep. Judging by this map, I'm assuming they'd be heading towards the apartment block. There's enough real estate in that thing to house a good sized operation, I'd bet." Returning to the showroom, he looks over the cars briefly. "These things appear to be worth good money. I'm thinking those 2 are more likely to be involved with some sort of chop shop as opposed to the ex-nobility. Or perhaps the former nobles have a new enterprise they're running. These might be stolen from citizens in Jagrati, it's far from the objective of the mission but let's properly confiscate these after the sweep and try to find their rightful owners." Kreuhn turns to leave the showroom ,and goes towards the Leisureplex
Avatar
The leisureplex is a large three story building that was once a combination of gym, apartment building, and a small farming deck on the roof where locals would grow what they wanted together to supplement what goods they could get at market. The building looks to have taken damage during he scream. Windows have been blown out, doors are missing, machinery has been overturned and stripped for parts. Graffiti coats every surface in some way or another.
Avatar
havelthegravel(Tim) 19-Mar-22 02:47 AM
Kreuhn will enter the building, mostly worrying about being quick rather than stealthy. At the same time, he's looking and listening through the halls to try and find any people who might be in here.
Avatar
Someone upstairs begins banging pots and pans together as you enter , shouting that the cooperative is here and there are soldiers coming into the building.
Avatar
havelthegravel(Tim) 22-Mar-22 12:58 AM
"Quickly, let's secure the building! I want 10 men outside to catch any runners, everyone else with me!" Stun baton in hand, he's sticking close to the troops and will attempt to kick open the first door he sees
Avatar
The first floor where you are remains an exercise and recreation area. You boot open a door and it leads to a fire escape stairwell people are running up to get to the second floor.
13:08
You sense maybe ten are on the stairwell at different heights above you
Avatar
havelthegravel(Tim) 22-Mar-22 01:48 PM
Kreuhn grabs his Grapnel launcher from his backpack and tries to fire it up the stairwell to get in front of them, taking 2 main actions to do so (Really wish I readied it lol, I had 2 more ready slots that are empty. Oh well)
Avatar
You fly through the air on your speedy zip line to appear on the stair landing between them and the door of the second floor. Instinctively, the crowd takes a half step back, those in back pushing as they do not yet realize what has happened
Avatar
havelthegravel(Tim) 23-Mar-22 12:33 AM
Kreuhn slams his stun baton into the metal handrail, the sound of ringing steel tubing mixes with a crackling electric arc from the baton. "Alright! You're surrounded, you can't really outnumber me on these narrow stairs, and you've got soldiers behind you. Give up now and you'll all be uninjured. Either way, you're all making it out of here alive."
Avatar
Seeing the reality of the situation, they look to be willing to comply. There isn't much of a place for them to escape or run to, and they wait to hear what you;d like them to do now that they've accepted your offer of giving up and not being hurt
Avatar
havelthegravel(Tim) 24-Mar-22 02:31 AM
"Alright, our primary objective here is the former nobles. I want your help in locating them, along with whatever defenses they might have. I do need to capture criminals as well, but that's of far less importance. If you can help us, it'll certainly look good to a judge. I will personally testify that you assisted the sweep through the ruins, and do everything I can to reduce your sentences. Like I said, you don't have a choice in getting arrested today, but you do have a choice on the sentencing. If I've misjudged you, and you're innocent refugees, then the courts will discover that. My men have plenty of food and medicine on hand, and they've got orders to give it freely to any who need it."

(We could question them if you want, probably smart to consolidate our gains at this point)

Kreuhn turns towards the captured noble, crouching down to his level. "Alright, I'm not much of one for torture, I don't really think it's right. However, Corporal Brutus downstairs is quite the fan of it. I said I'll try things my way first, and if that doesn't work he'll be in charge of plan b. My plan a is a lot better for both of us, I can assure you. We can get some medics to patch you up, dull the pain a bit, and get you to Jagrati in a separate escort. Brutus suggested a combination of thumb screws and piano wire, which would then be followed by bringing you back to Jagrati with your "subjects". I think that's a very bad idea for plenty of reasons, so I sincerely hope Plan A works. I'm asking you how many nobles are here in the ruins, where they're currently located, and where you'd all plan to escape to if anything goes wrong." (He's bluffing about 'Corporal Brutus', and wouldn't condone any sort of interrogation harder than a few punches. He's also not planning on letting this guy near the refugees on the way back to the city.)

He talks of house Meridian, who were arrested before this and you know they're in custody already. He is not sure of any other nobles who might be hiding here but there is an anti-monarchist gang that has taken up residence in the apartment complex. They're heavily armed and occasionally worked with the nobles before since the nobles have paid well. There haven't been jobs going out in the past few months as far as this man is aware, so he is not sure how many of the gang remain or what their inclinations might be now.

"Thank you very much, I'll uphold my side of the bargain." Kreuhn turns towards the others soldiers nearby "Lets get these fellows patched up and secured, keep 'em separate from the refugees. If anyone's got some Lift or something along those lines, I'd like to be patched up as well. Once they're all taken care of, we'll surround the apartment block. After those gunshots, there's zero chance we're undetected. Let's get Bravo group to rejoin us as well, it seems like the apartment block is all we need so splitting up isn't productive anymore."

The squads come together again a block from the target building, their own search far less fruitful than your own but they've cleared several smaller buildings on their own, rounding up less interesting refugees and no interesting salvage. Ahead of you, the target building is dark and many windows have been secured with boards over them. The door is entirely gone, and you don't see anyone on the front stoop. (edited)

Kreuhn enters in the front of his troops, trying to keep an ear out for any movement or breathing from within

No one seems to be openly out in the hallways or within the stoop of the ground floor. There is a stairwell leading up from the trash strewn entryeway and you hear feet moving rapidly upstairs as much like the lesiureplex , the people here have some kind of distrust of the NMC and those that do its bidding.

Rocks thrown from the roof or upper windows begin to pelt those outside.

Kreuhn goes towards the stairs, shouting along the way "We're here for the former nobles and criminals. Refugees will be cared for and escorted to Jagrati. We have food and medicine!" He turns back to his men and says quiter "I don't think these folks will be as cooperative. I still don't want anyone getting shot if we can help it, so I want some of you to come and help me up close. Tackle and grapple them if you don't have stun batons."

Moving into the building you see the decision before you is to sweep the lower apartments, and up the stairs to the upper floors.

Kreuhn starts with the lower apartments

The lower apartments have doors in varying states of repair. The first one you come to is broken entirely. and you can see the inside has been looted almost entirely. Only trash and the desiccated remains of a body have been left behind. This was a family home once, but nothing has lived here for many years from the age of the remains.
